Vesturland (western region) with its largest town of Akranes, is famed for Snæfellsjökull National Park and its several iconic spots: Kirkjufell mountain, black-pebbled Djúpalónssandur and Dritvík beaches, Londrangar basalt cliffs, coastal villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar, Gerðuberg cliffs, Eldborg Crater, and numerous waterfalls: Barnafoss, Kirkjufellsfoss, Glymur, Hraunfossar and Bjarnarfoss.
Kirkjufell is a 463m high mountain in Snæfellsnes that is the most photographed mountain in the country. Kirkjufell was one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones season 6 and 7, featuring as the "arrowhead mountain" that the Hound and the company north of the Wall see when capturing a wight.
A uniquely shaped crated that is noticeable from Snæfellsnesvegur (route 54) in Snæfellsnes, as it stands alone and rises 100 meters above sea level, high over its surroundings. The crater erupted in historical times, right about when people were first coming to settle on this challenging island, around twelve hundred years ago.
